It's fascinating to see how it can tell you when your body is stressed and needs more recovery -- and that this can happen even when you feel fine.
For example, one day I woke up feeling semi-energized and ready to head to a workout class, but I noticed my HRV and recovery were pretty bad.
The day before was pretty stressful; I did a challenging cardio workout, walked several miles around New York City, and I had a drink that night alcohol is said to be one of the biggest culprits in tanking your HRV.
I also like Whoop's "Sleep Coach" because it tells me how much sleep to get each night. You can select the recommendation based on if you want to "Get by, Perform, or Peak" the next day in terms of performance.
In addition to in-depth sleep metrics, the app also polls you on different habits to better tailor the advice. After I manually entered my first few workouts, it was able to automatically detect when I started a new workout, similar to the Apple Watch.

I will say it was a bit confusing for me to set up the strap, but once I checked out the app instructions and watched the YouTube video, I was all set.
The band can be a little tricky to snap on and off I usually will loosen it and slide it over my wrist to remove it, but you're supposed to keep it pretty tight.
The charger attaches directly to the band, which is cool since you don't have to take it off to charge. However, the first few times I tried to charge the Whoop, I found it difficult to figure out how to slide the charger attachment on to the band while wearing it.
Since I used both the Fitbit Versa 2 and the Whoop Strap 3. Ultimately, I wanted to see which tracker was a better value by providing useful data that I wouldn't otherwise know, and tips for what to do with that data.
When tracking a workout, I noticed each tracker gave me different stats. During one exercise session, the Fitbit Versa reported that I burned calories, my average HR was , my max HR and walked 5, steps.
For the same workout, the Whoop reported I burned calories, my average HR was and my max HR was When you start an activity, WHOOP will then show you in real-time whether you need to push harder, you're overdoing, or you've reached your goal.
Film your workout and overlay live data including heart rate, strain, and calories burned. Share on social media, or review later with a trainer to analyze training stimuli.
I'll go into recovery in the next section, but for now, let's discuss strain. Measured on a scale of zero to 21, strain indicates your cardiovascular load, or how hard you're working.
The Whoop measures your strain for each tracked activity, and over the course of each day overall. The strain metric is personalized based on your heart rate data, and accounts for differences in individual fitness levels.
The Whoop first determines your maximum heart rate, then uses that number to establish your personal heart rate zones. It then monitors the duration of time you spend in each of your heart rate zones to calculate your strain.

The app explains that "all out, near maximal workouts" are considered 18 and above, strenuous workouts are 18 to 14, moderate workouts are 14 to 10, and everything below 10 represents light or minimal activities.
After workouts, I'm always excited to see my strain score. After a one-hour indoor SoulCycle session, the Whoop said I burned calories, reached average and maximum heart rates of bpm and bpm, respectively, and earned a strain score of In contrast, after a gentle, one-hour yoga session, the Whoop said I burned 92 calories, reached average and maximum heart rates of 90bpm and bpm, respectively, and earned a strain score of 4.
The app says that low-strain activities like yoga promote recovery. As a yoga teacher, I already know this, but I love that Whoop offers education and encouragement like this.
An interesting observation I've noticed is that out of all the activities I do, running is the most straining on my cardiovascular system.
I've been wearing the Whoop for a little over a month, and my highest strain score for a single tracked activity was The app also calculates your total daily strain, taking into account tracked workouts and all other heart rate data.
This can help you determine how non-workout activities contribute to your daily strain. One of the things I like about the Whoop is that it gives you a daily optimal strain target, based on your recovery.
